INTELLIGENT MANAGEMENT

There are two management adages that often get quoted in policy development circles – namely:

“What gets measured gets done” (or some variation of this); and “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”.

Both of these quotes are generally attributed to the management guru Peter Drucker. They are interesting quotes because of course they essentially contradict and fight against each other – in that one is encouraging you to be very formulaic and process driven in your approach – and the other is warning you against this. Actions Speak Louder Than Words

I often find myself – in day to day conversation – using common phrases/sayings that I have been taught and heard as I’ve grown up. I was listening to a panel debate on Newsnight the other night when I had one of those light bulb moments! The panel was being chaired by presenter Emily Maitlis and included Senior Editor from Novara Media Ash Sarkar, novelist Anne Atkins, artist Tracey Emin and former Labour Party Deputy Leader Harriet Harman. The discussion was on women’s rights – and how far we had come (as a society) in making men and women more equal.

The debate was wide ranging and ambitious – covering politics, art and media, sexual liberation, #MeToo and the workplace in the space of a 15...

Superstars Need Us

Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden famously said – “the main ingredient in stardom is the rest of the team.”  Do you believe this?  Have we not seen plenty of elite performers who are narcissistic and lack self- awareness?  Is the statement too idealistic?  You have all experienced the extremely talented member of your organization (or favorite sports team) who appears to think they can succeed without the support of their teammates.

Yet there is evidence that teams have more success when the concepts of self -sacrifice and peer accountability take hold....
