Politics plays a pivotal and pervasive role in the lives of people in the UK and always has. It pervades every aspect of life and is literally part of an individual’s psyche both consciously and sub-consciously. What this means is that the precariousness of politics, such as that driven by Brexit, creates a "symbiotic psychology". As citizens, we too feel the heightened angst, tension, fear, anger, frustration, resentment, stress, disappointment, betrayal and such just as the politicians who are directly in the midst of this “crisis” irrespective of which side of the argument they cling to.
On one level, this makes for an interesting life, newspaper articles and general culture and such but when these machinations around Brexit have no sign of abating, regardless of what final decision is reached about the UK’s relationship with Europe, then one thing is certain, this is going to go on for years and years and even more years.
It is a defining point in the countries character and has left an indelible mark.
Brexit is trauma and such trauma is subsumed by citizens who will continue to be trapped in this psychodrama, seemingly forever.
It is therefore entirely rational to assume that many of us will suffer from PTSD symptoms that we take into our relationships, workplace, life decisions and so on. Ordinary citizens are suffering psychologically and emotionally.
We are trapped in democracy and freedom seems to be nowhere in sight.
